Lightning Horseman Game Review

Don’t go out after dark if you’re of a nervous disposition, because the roads are stalked by a grisly spectre that’s on the lookout for human heads! The headless horseman is one of the great characters of spooky stories, most famously depicted in Washington Irving’s Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and it’s long overdue for him to make his pokie debut in Lightning Horseman. But this ghost is a little bit special, because he can bring his special lightning powers to bear to make you a ton of cash! So is Lightning Horseman your ticket to riches or will you lose your head? Let’s take a look in our Lightning Horseman slot game review!

Background

Lightning Horseman seems to be quite heavily based on the traditional legend of the Headless Horseman, with a background that’s very evocative of the colonial United States full of wooden houses, thatched barns and the ever present full moon above old and twisted trees. The symbols on the reels themselves also fit this theme, with all the high value characters wearing period garb, while they seem to be based on characters depicted in the short story. The low value symbols are the standard 9 – A, but it’s impossible to talk about this game without referring to the exciting lightning strikes from the game’s lightning spins mechanic which crackle and zap across the reels.

The mechanics in this slot are nice and traditional, and as in many slots you’ll play with five reels and three rows, though there is a bumper number of 40 pay lines on which you can bet as much as £/€/$50 per spin. The base game isn’t the most rewarding, and you’ll find the treasure chests pay the best, granting you 75x your stake for five, followed closely by the woman wearing a cape. The absolute top payout in the main game is to be had by landing five wilds fully stacked, for which you can win 600x your stake. The RTP is a little low at 95.5%, meaning you’ll be relying on those big wins and bonus features to help you combat the odds.

Bonuses

The main bonus feature in Lightning Horseman is the lightning re-spins feature which is also used by various other pokies out there, which challenges you to collect lightning bolts to win a prize. The bolts are effectively blanks because they don’t pay out on their own, which is annoying, but land six or more of them in one spin and the lightning re-spins feature will be activated. In this mode all the lightning symbols will be held in place and the rest of the symbols will spin around them, with any extra lightning symbols that land also freezing in place. You can keep spinning as long as you keep landing lightning symbols, and the round only stops when you fill the screen with bolts or fail to land a new symbol three times in a row. Once the spins are done all the bolts you collected will flip round to reveal a cash prize, which can include any of the jackpots on screen worth up to £/€/$62,500!

CasinoNZ Verdict

Lightning Horseman is a fun little pokie that relies heavily on its big bonus feature for excitement, but if you do manage to land one of the big jackpots you could walk away with a life changing amount!
