Play Online Roulette NZ

When many people think of casino games, the first thing that comes to mind is the classic roulette game. However, roulette is also popular online, and if you are new to playing roulette online, don’t worry – here are the basics you need to know.

How to play roulette online – the basics

There are two types of roulette typically played online.

  • In European roulette, sometimes referred to as French roulette, the wheel features 37 numbered slots. 18 of these slots are red, 18 are black, and a single zero which is green
  • In American roulette, there are 38 slots with the extra slot being a double zero.

A small white ball is spun around the wheel in each spin or round. The ball will eventually land in one of the 37 or 38 slots. To play the game, players bet on the outcome of which slot the ball will land in. Players may also place multiple bets at the same time.

When placing a bet, you can bet on any outcome. This means you can bet on a number, colour, odd numbers, even numbers, sets of numbers, or any combination of these outcomes.

When the ball comes to rest in one of the slots, and the winning number is revealed, all of the losing bets that have been made are swept from the table, and winners receive their payout. Payouts are represented in an odds format, for example, 5:1, which demonstrates the probability of the stake.

What types of roulette bet can you make, and what are the probabilities?

Apart from bets made on individual numbers, bets in roulette games fall into two categories.

  • Inside bets – Inside bets are given this name because when making an inside bet, the chip is placed on the inside of the betting area of the table. Inside bets have the lowest odds and as a result the highest payouts of up to 35:1 in European roulette.
  • Outside bets – Outside bets are arranged on the outside of the table’s betting area. Outside bets have the highest odds, but as a result, the lowest payouts 1:1 or 2:1 in European roulette.

Depending on the game, you may also be able to place other bets.

The house edge explained

Any keen mathematicians may note that offered odds and payouts don’t add up. The reason for this is that the green coloured zero has a tilt in favour of the house. This is known as the house edge. You are still able to bet on zero.

What is different about playing roulette online?

Online roulette naturally offers a different gaming experience. Roulette physics in a real-life casino setting doesn’t apply online, and you are solely playing on the odds.

The controls you use in online roulette games are as follows:

  • Spin – Use this control to confirm your bet, and start the spin
  • Double – You can double your bet using this control
  • Clear bets – Use this button to remove any bets you have placed
  • Undo – Use this to undo only your last bet
  • Double and Spin – This function will double your last bet, then start the spin
  • Rebet and Spin – When you use this button, your last bet will still stand and the wheel will spin
