Creature from the Black Lagoon Game Review

The Creature from the Black Lagoon is a slightly obscure 1950s monster movie that might not be top of many people’s watch lists anymore, but nevertheless helped define what we expect from evil things lurking in the darkness in every other movie since then. The dramatic music, the tense stalking scenes, the grizzled old hunter out for one last kill and the damsel in distress needing to be saved from the beast’s clutches: It’s all there, and now you can experience the B-movie goodness in slot form! But will you save the girl and return with the monster’s head, or will you end up in a watery grave? Let’s take a look in our Creature from the Black Lagoon slot game review.

Background

Creature from the Black Lagoon has to be one of the most stylish slots we’ve ever seen, and every choice they’ve made is 1950s B-move kitsch done to perfection: The sepia toned swamp setting in the background, the 50s pinup girl, the muscle bound and square jawed heroes going to save the day. It all looks great, and with a fantastically tense 50s soundtrack to go with it, as well as extensive and well done animations that could have come from the movie itself, it’s a real treat if you’re a fan of the film or the genre. The symbols are all unique and include a variety of monster hunting equipment like binoculars, grapple hooks, cameras and scuba gear for the low value symbols. The high value icons are a combination of our heroes and the monster itself, as well as a scuba diving wild to go with them.

The main game itself uses a standard layout of five reels and three rows with 20 pay lines to play with, on which you can bet a maximum of £/$/€100 per spin. One of the best features the Creature from the Black Lagoon slot game boasts in its main round is the number of wilds, three in total, which can stick on the reels for a second spin after they land and help you generate even more wins. The RTP in this game is nice and high at 96.5%, but your mileage will vary considerably as this is a high volatility game, so don’t expect to come out a winner every time!

Bonuses

So far this game has been a stylish but run of the mill pokie that offers some fairly basic thrills, but that all changes in the bonus rounds. Land up to five of the free spins scatters to get 20 free spins, and you’ll be treated to a fun little video of the creature kidnapping the damsel. Not only will you get your regular wins, but you also have to watch out for the target symbols, which you need to collect to fight against the creature. Every two targets you collect lets you hit it with your harpoon gun, giving you a spreading wild that takes over a whole row and a re-spin to see if it can win you any cash. Collect ten targets and you’ll kill the beast, setting the damsel free and earning yourself ten more free spins!

CasinoNZ Verdict

A truly excellent theme helps set Creature from the Black Lagoon apart from the rest of the pack, with great attention to detail in the style and some really fun animations and sound effects. It could be a bit more generous in its main game, but the bonus round is so fun you’ll be itching to get back at it!
